eThekwini Municipality visits Donnelly Road flats on The Bluff

Officials from eThekwini Municipality conducted an oversight visit to Donnelly Road flats to engage with the beneficiaries.

OFFICIALS from eThekwini Municipality met with the residents of Ward 66 recently to explain the verification process for the Donnelly Road Housing Project. Senior municipal leaders conducted an oversight visit with beneficiaries at the Donnelly Road flat.
Chairperson of the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee, councillor Themba Mvubu, led the delegation.

The team explained the steps involved in the verification and clarified expectations for applicants.
The initiative aims to ensure that housing allocations are:
  1. Fair
  2. Transparent and
  3. Aligned with municipal policy.

Mvubu said that verification is essential before finalising allocations as it confirms that beneficiaries still meet the qualifying criteria. The project is a rental housing initiative, with units priced at R850 for one-bedroom and R1 800 for two-bedroom options.
The allocation process for the flats has sparked concern and anger, leading some community members to occupy the units without approval from eThekwini Municipality.

Many residents who have been living in the rental houses near the new flats, accuse the Human Settlements Department of stalling the handover to the rightful occupants.
The R52m Donnelly Road housing project aims at providing affordable housing in the south of Durban, bordering Wentworth and The Bluff. However, Mvubu said, the municipality cannot finalise allocations without confirming that all beneficiaries still meet the qualifying requirement.

The municipality is expected to finalise the verification process before allocating the units to all beneficiaries.
