The golden gains club: Seniors get fit in Wentworth

About 70 senior citizens from the Durban South came together for some fitness fun and health check-ups at the Blue Roof Life Spaces.

MORE than 70 elderly participants put on their colourful headbands and fitness apparel for a fitness and wellness day at the Blue Roof Life Spaces recently. The event, hosted by Team Stokes Fitness, brought together senior citizens from the Durban South for some light workouts and free health checks.

Meaning behind the cause

Taariq Stokes, the founder of Team Stokes Fitness, said that this initiative stemmed from a recognition of the difficulties many seniors encounter.

“Pensioners often lack good healthcare, support and a sense of community. I wanted to make a place where they could feel comfortable and have a healthy experience,” said Stokes.

The day commenced with an educational session addressing health and wellness topics relevant to the elderly. This was followed by a gentle cardio workout, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the physical capabilities of the senior attendees.

Mediskills Healthcare Foundation thereafter conducted free health screenings, testing sugar levels, pressure levels and Body Mass Index.

Appreciation for support

Stokes extended his appreciation to Linda James of Youth Education Support Services for facilitating the use of Blue Roof Life Spaces. He also thanked Sister Allison Andrews and her team at the Mediskills Healthcare Foundation for giving free health checks.

Andrews, founder of Mediskills Healthcare Foundation, said she was grateful for the invitation from Stokes. “Our partnership worked well since we both wanted to serve the elderly with respect and care and our organisations share the same vision,” she said.
