While there was a modest turnout, the committed group comprising healthcare professionals and community members united with a clear message of raising awareness and promoting early detection of tuberculosis (TB).
Promoting accessibility
The initiative, led by Sister Renette Roskruge, a nurse at the Gateway Clinic and the founder of Thabitha Teens, aimed to address the pressing rise of TB cases within the community. The focus extended beyond encouraging testing as it brought vital services such as general health screenings and TB tests directly to residents’ doorsteps.
Programme for the day
The day kicked off with some praise and worship sessions and spirited dance performances by members of the Thabitha Teens. However, community participation remained limited, with only 48 residents joining in person, while many others observed the proceedings from their balconies. Sister Roskruge said that she believes the ongoing concerns over safety, particularly due to persistent gun violence in the area, likely discouraged wider attendance.

Tackling TB
She underscored the growing challenge TB presents to the community, noting that its increasing prevalence poses a tangible burden. Roskruge said programmes like this outreach are vital as they serve to educate the public and provide timely screening opportunities, which are essential for early detection and effective management of TB.
She extended her thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the day. Special acknowledgments went to the Aids Healthcare Foundation, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali and the Privileged Church for their supportive role.
While the turnout was smaller than anticipated, the significance of the event was nonetheless profound.
