Quins clip Eagles’ wings in final pre-season cricket match

All teams with the exception of the Saturday side have league commitments on Sunday, 28 September.

UMBILO Harlequins Cricket Club played its final pre-season match against Isipingo Eagles at Harlequins Oval on Sunday, 21 September.

Quins’ outfield, like all others in the area, displaying some symptoms of drying due to the protracted lack of rain, was lighting fast.

Unfortunately the wicket which usually has quick and bouncy characteristics, had insufficient time to harden after two successive evenings of precipitation, and was soft and slow. Eagles batted first and compiled a below par tally despite the adverse wicket, of 115 runs all out. Quins’ pace attack performed acceptably and the use of a solitary slow bowler proved successful with Dieter Liebenberg performing above par.

Quins appeared to be in heaps of woe when the top order was neutralised within a fairly short period of time, but a resolute innings of 27 runs by Saint John Piek and a charismatic albeit fortuitous knock of 41 runs by Clinton Abrahams resurrected Quins’ innings. Clintons’ innings was typical of his character, comprising plenty of brave strokes and misses as well as some powerful pulls and lofted drives over the inner circle of fielders. Quins passed the Eagles tally of 115 runs losing eight wickets in the process. This is a match which Quins achieved some degree of objective in that match time was accomplished, ideally a quicker wicket would have been more suitable though.
