Top teams to scrum down for Ronnie van Rooyen Memorial rugby

This year 24 teams from various clubs will showcase their talents and everyone is invited to go and watch the future of South African rugby.

DURBAN Harlequins Rugby Club hosts the annual Ronnie van Rooyen Memorial rugby tournament on Friday and Saturday, 13 and 14 March.

Many top clubs from KZN will be participating in this not-to-be-missed tournament, with the weekend’s fixtures kicking off with two U20 games on Friday night.

The senior games and one U20 game will be played on Saturday.

This wonderful festival of rugby is a permanent fixture on the KZN club rugby calendar and is played in honour of one of the greatest club administrators in KZN club rugby history. Uncle Ronnie, as he was affectionately known to all club rugby fans, played a big role in amalgamating the Wanderers and Grosvenor Old Boys rugby clubs in the early 80’s. He served the newly formed Durban Harlequins RFC first as a player and then as an administrator, and was a great mentor to players and committee members. His passion for the game was unsurpassed.

This year 24 teams from various clubs will showcase their talents and everyone is invited to go and watch the future of South African rugby. Premier league clubs are again well represented with traditional powerhouses Durban Collegians, College Rovers, Varsity College and Crusaders fielding teams, together with the ever-improving Amanzimtoti Rugby Club.
