THANKS to Roy Funnell, Wanderers Bowling Club had its flag flying high last weekend when the annual singles shootout between all the district club open singles winners took place.

Roy flew through his three matches on Saturday and on Sunday found himself in the semis playing veteran Martin Blades of Hillcrest.

He won this match and made it to the finals where he met the bright, young up-and-coming Hillary player Jarryd Ramsden, who had just despatched Nigel Cottrell in the other semi. The final was fairly level in the early stages then Jarryd eased ahead and maintained the lead to win 21-11 and take the coveted title.

Very well done to Roy for firstly winning the club’s open singles against some fairly fierce competition and then going so far in the winners’ shootout.

The only club competition played was the nominated mixed pairs between Robin Grobler and Lorraine Du Preez against Lofty Cawthorne and Jo-Anne Jordaan. Lofty and Jo-Jo emerged victorious at 32-19.

Next Saturday, 8 August is the start of the men’s nominated pairs at 1.15pm.

Bowlers are to note that due to popular request, they will be doing another English Premier Soccer League pub draw for the 2015/2016 season, on the same terms as last year. Cost is R100 per team on a first come first paid basis, with monies payable to Eric, Danny or Patti. The draw for the teams will take place on Friday night, 7 August in the main bar at 6.45pm.The winning team will receive R1,000, second R400, eight R300, 13th R200 and last team R100.

Members are encouraged to support the kitchen and the meals produced from it by the enthusiastic Matthew Unger. From personal experience, this writer can vouch for a substantially tasty and tender curry and really good value for the small amount charged. Note also that the club has a well-equipped upstairs hall for hire for friends or relatives who want to celebrate a wedding, birthday, bar mitzvah, prize giving or any other kind of celebration or party. Bookings can be made through Patty, Mitty, Ian or Daniel.

Next Sunday, 9 August is the breakfast trips. Contact Jeff Bolt on 082-808-7793 to confirm your entry, then on Wednesday, 12 August it’s the running of the roadrunner’s open pairs (in spite of rumours that it has been cancelled). Call Bob Hayward who will be running it in Ronnie’s absence, on 076-403-2265 to enter or confirm your team.

Last Friday’s snowball of R800 was not won as Karyn Wallace was not present when her number was drawn. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack Jackie Freeman; beef pack Porky; chicken pack Jackie Freeman (again).

In the monthly bowls draw, the following were winners: Ernie Lochner R750, Carl van Rooyen R500, Robin Grobler R250.
