Development bowlers throw down gauntlet at Wentworth BC

The kitchen is open from Tuesday to Sunday for breakfast, pub lunches and Sunday roast lunches.

AT another well attended Wentworth Bowling Club family and friends development bowls on 5 August, Wayne Smith, Zoe Dougal and Storm Beukes ploughed through the opposition’s bowls to walk away with the day’s top honours. Eaton Rice, Johan Nel and Laura du Toit were awarded the biscuit prizes while Eaton and Ina Davies shared the rewards of the board draw.

The following Wednesday saw a full green of development bowlers take the field. Once again Wayne Smith emerged victorious, partnering a rapidly improving novice bowler, Geanne Mitchell. Herbie Roux and Lorraine White took home the biscuits. Because of the number of bowlers, two board draws were required. Rob de Gouveia and Vicki Williams each took home the main prizes with Phil Hill and Eaton Rice scooping the second prizes.

Friday’s Bluff Meat men’s bowls saw John Somerville, Claude Newman and Rob de Gouveia accumulate a massive +27 to take the first prize. Arnie Harper, Joe McNamara and Johan Nel, with a respectable +18, had to settle for second prize. Ivor Aylward, ‘Smiler’ Wilesmith and Colin Coetzee were recognised as the sportmen for the day. Ina Davies (pork) and Graham Bransby (beef) were the winners of the weekly meat raffles. Jumbo Nel and Grahan Bransby were the respective winners of board draws one and two. Both second board prizes went the way of Kurt ‘Rabbit Foot’ Spack.

Bowlers are reminded of the bumper Rawson’s breakfast trips that will be held on Thursday, 27 August. Cash prizes will be awarded down to 10th place. Entries are piling in so phone the club to check for a place.

The community is reminded that the family and friends development bowls held every Wednesday afternoon is an opportunity for all those interested to try their hand at the game. It is played in a friendly spirit to encourage any interested ‘newbies’ to get involved in the sport. All are welcome.
