Last year’s women’s nominated pairs winners retain Wentworth BC title
Condolences extended to Jo-Jo Jordaan after the loss of her mother last week.

IT was a busy week at Wentworth Bowling Club, which offered bowlers five opportunities to take to the greens.
Activities started with the Chicken Shack any pairs competition on Wednesday morning.
Bill Addinall and Dave Carroll accumulated a healthy four plus 28 to take the top honours. They were closely followed by Julie Sutherland and Amanda who managed a 4 plus 23. Second session prize went the way of Colin Coetzee and Dave Gardner. Dave Carroll added to his spoils by winning the first prize on the first board draw, leaving Gerald Castor Royal with the second prize.
Not to be outdone, Gerald went on to win the first prize on the second board with Ina Davies pocketing the second. Colin Nicholas was the happy winner of the beef roast raffle. The next Chicken Shack pairs will be held on 30 September.
On Wednesday afternoon, a full green of bowlers turned up for the family and friends development bowls. Bokka van der Westhuizen skipped Zoe Dougall and Dillon Waterman into first place. Cora van der Westhuizen and Albert van Niekerk took home the biscuits. Johan Nel and Spider Williams were winners in the board draws with Vicky Williams and Anne Bonthrone both happily slipping the second prizes into their purses.
Family and friends development bowls every Wednesday afternoon is an opportunity for all those interested in trying their hand at the game. It is played in a friendly spirit to encourage any interested ‘newbies’ to get involved in the sport. It has a late start to encourage scholars to try their hand at the game after school activities. All are welcome.
Bowlers in the Rawsons breakfast trips were treated to a pop up bumper day with prizes down to 10th place. After a hearty breakfast, competitors filled the greens to do battle for the first prize. In the end, the result was a draw between Gary Moffat and his team of Moses and Jumbo Nel, and Steve Baker’s team of Wayne Smith and Anne Bonthrone. Gary and Steve had to draw for a countdown and Gary drew the higher number, giving his team the first prize. Skips who led their teams into the prizes were Bob Hayward, Brian Osman, June Foster, Bill Addinall, Spider Williams, Colin Howes, Arnie Harper and William Richardson. In the monthly Rawsons raffle, Spider Williams won the whiskey and Tom Cat Cavanagh and Cheryl Waterman were winners of bottles of red wine. The board draw was won by Ellen Loots and Kurt ‘Rabbit Foot’ Spack. The bumper competition will pop up periodically so bowlers are urged to keep their place in the event by playing each month to ensure an entry. The club will host the next Rawsons breakfast trips on 24 September.
The Bluff Meat’s men’s pensioner bowls on Friday morning was played in muggy, warm conditions. Winners on the day were the two Colins – Howes and Nicholas – playing with Neil Smith. John Somerville skipped Joe McNamara and Dave Carroll into second place. Dudley Dorrofield, Herbie Roux and Henry Welgemoed were awarded the week’s sportsmen’s prizes. John Somerville left with the pork roast and Graham Bransby was all smiles when he won the beef roast. Festivities resulted in three 60/40 board draws being held. Winners were Jumbo Nel, Brian Smith and Ina Davies. Second prizes went to Hilton Lassak, Herbie Hoffman and Hennie Marais.
The final of the women’s nominated pairs competition was played on Saturday. Ina Davies and Bernadette Pool took on the 2014 champions, Cora van der Westhuizen and Eileen du Plessis. After a hard fought 21 ends that saw some tight heads and dramatic saving shots being played by both skips, Cora and Eileen retained their title by taking the game with a five shot lead.
Sunday morning heralded the monthly Spurs Big Jim any pairs competition. Jumbo Nel and Ron Addinall won both their games and with a shot advantage of 16, were declared the morning’s winners. Robert Mlongo and Moses Ndava took the second prize. The second session prize went the way of Dave Rowe and Patricia Buys. Resounding applause filled the room when Kurt Spack’s number was pulled from the bag to give him the big money on the first 60/40 board. Robin de Gouveia took the second prize. Anne Bonthrone was the second board winner with Maria Cavanagh taking the second prize. The Cavanaghs maintained their winning streak when Tom Cat scooped the pork roast. Wayne Smith was the winner of the whiskey raffle. Next month’s Spur’s Big Jim pairs will be held on 27 September.
