Lucky rabbit’s foot works a charm for Ina

The community is encouraged to attend the family and friends development bowls held every Wednesday afternoon.

THIS week’s family and friends development bowls at Wentworth Bowling Club saw Margaret Walters make it two in a row when she paired with Terry Micholson to scoop the first prize money.

The biscuits were won by Dave Carroll and Dudley Saunders.

Phil Hill was all smiles when he heard his name called for both prizes on the first board draw. Spider Williams and Bokka van der Westhuizen shared the spoils of the second board.

Terry Micholson maintained his winning streak by skipping Dave Carroll and Ken Koch into a lead of plus 13 to take first place in Friday’s Bluff Meats men’s bowls. John Somerville. Kurt Spack and Andy Jones were four shots behind in second place. The sportsman’s prize went the way of Willie Gericke, Rick Blann and Smiler Wilesmith.

Rumour has it that Kurt Spack dropped his lucky rabbit’s foot during the course of the morning’s bowls. It was picked up by Ina Davies who kept it safely in her pocket, only returning it at the end of the raffles and board draws. The results of this were astounding. Ina walked away with both the pork and beef roasts, first prize on the first board draw and second prize on the second board. Dave Carroll and Jumbo Nel prevented Ina claiming a clean sweep by taking the second prize on the first board, and first prize on the second board.

On Saturday morning eight women braved the severe conditions to take to battle out the first round of the drawn fours competition. Maree Sadie skipped Jo-Jo Jordaan, Margaret Walters and Bernie Pool into the top spot against Cora van der Westhuizen, Ina Davies, Gwen Tait and Anne Bonthrone. Once again the true spirit of sportsmanship prevailed and at the end of the morning, the game of bowls was the winner.

The club applauds the generosity of Johan (Joe) Vorster who has kindly donated a much needed lawnmower for the maintenance of the greens and the club’s surrounds.

Bowlers are reminded of the World Cup bowls on Saturday, 19 September. This event promises to be lots of fun, with magnificent prize money sponsored by Howard’s Towing. Only 22 entries will be accepted and there a still few spaces on the entry sheet.
