Zoë tipped to go all the way in PN novice champs
On Thursday morning bowlers took to the greens to contest the Rawson’s breakfast trips.

TWO of Wentworth Bowling Club’s novice bowlers returned to Durban BC on Saturday to continue their quest in the Port Natal novice championship.
Unfortunately Brian Smith lost a ding-dong battle that saw the lead change hand many times during the game.
Zoë Dougall won her last qualifying game to win a place in the quarter final. Playing like a true champion, Zoë systematically built up a lead which she maintained throughout the game to secure a place in the semi-finals next Saturday. The club proudly congratulates both bowlers for their achievements and looks forward to Zoë’s success next weekend when both the semi-finals and the final will be played.
Terry Micholson and Johan Nel won Wednesday’s Chicken Shack pairs with an one shot advantage over John Somerville and Colin Nicholas who has to settled for second place. Chris Pozyn and Johan Vorster won the second session prize.
John Somerville and Anne Bonthrone shared the spoils on the first 60/40 board. The second board saw Brian Brittan and Cora van der Westhuizen take the booty. Tom Cloete won the raffled meat.
The Family and Friends development bowls on Wednesday afternoon was won by Johan Nel and Albert van Niekerk. Dave Carrol, Maggie Faure and Lorraine White were awarded the biscuit prize. Maggie won the first prize on the 60/40 board and Phil Hill won second prize. The monthly bring and braai will take place after this week’s bowls. Anyone in the community who wants to try their hands at the friendly game of bowls is invited to attend this development activity each Wednesday. Play starts at 3pm. Club coaches are available every Wednesday at 1.30pm to assist new bowlers. Anyone keen to take advantage of this can contact John Somerville on 083-512-4440.

Lovuyo Ndaba. Chris Pozyn and Ken Thomas secured the second prize with the second session going the way of Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and Eric Miller who managed to win by 16 shots. Brian Smith and Dave Rowe were the first 60/40 board winners and Ina Davies and Brian Brittan pocketed the prizes from the second board. Ellen Loots was the winner of the raffled whiskey and Ina Davies and Phil Hill won the Rawsons red wine.
Friday’s Bluff Meats men’s bowls saw Gerald Castor Royle make it three in a row when he skipped Johan Nel to victory. In second place were Jumbo Nel, Kurt Spack and Robin de Gouviea. Dave Arnold, Bob Hayward and Dirk Roos were the winners of the sportman’s prize. Graham Bransby celebrated the end of the morning’s bowls when his number was pulled from the bag to take home the raffled pork. A jubilant Alan Ritchie took home a substantial beef roast. Herbie Hoffman won the main prize on the first 60/40 board and Steve Evenwell pocketed the second prize. Adding to his winnings, Graham Bransby scooped the main prize on the second board and Steve Evenwell made to two in a row and took the second prize.
Braving the steamy weather on Sunday morning, bowlers took to the green in an attempt to win the prizes in the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim competition. Terry Micholson and Herby Roux proved too strong for their opposition to take first place on the winner’s podium. Johnny and Eileen du Plessis ended the morning in second place. The second session prize went the way of Dave Rowe and Norman Robinson. The first board was won by Dave Carroll and Anne Bonthrone. Kitty Schaefer and Ronel Morel pocketed the spoils from the second board. A delighted Eric Miller won the raffled meat roast.
Sadly the Bluff bowling community lost two icons last week. Wayne ‘Doggie’ Tonkin from Bluff Bowling Club died on Friday morning. Sincere condolences are extended to Elise and the Tonkin family. Frank Greyvenstein from Wentworth Bowling Club died on Saturday morning. Frank was a stalwart at Wentworth BC, serving the club as club and competition secretaries during his loyal membership. His dedication and allegiance to the game and his commitment to the club will be sorely missed. Condolences are extended to Zonia and the rest of Frank’s family. A memorial service for Frank will be held at the NG Kerk in Montclair on Thursday, 4 February at 10am. Members who intend to pay their respects are reminded to wear club colours. A celebration of Frank’s life will take place at the club after the development bowls on Wednesday, 10 February. His friends and family are invited to attend.
