AT Wanderers Bowling Club, the men’s open singles got underway on Saturday morning at 9am.

In the first round, Brian Deats beat Clive Symons 21-4, Graham Funnell beat Russell Shepherd 21-13, Terrance McGlynn got a walk-over from Archie Fisher, Bob Hayward beat Tommy Simpkins 21-14, Roy Funnell and Steve Van Rooyen’s game was held over due to the inter districts, Pat McGlynn got a walk-over from Ruaan Victor, Mike Flack walk-over from Wonke Somtseu, Anthony Carr walk-over from Phil Pieterse, Ken Thomas walk-over from Claude Newman, Eric Smit beat Luke Van Rooyen 21-10, Robbie Carr walk-over from Derek Stevens.

The women also got their women’s open singles underway. As there were only six entrants, they played a round robin. Results to hand are: Jo-Anne Jordaan beat Chantal Hearnshaw 21-9, Gwen Tait beat Lorinne Hawkins 21-19, Chantal beat Gwen 21-6, Val McCaffrey beat Barbara Neill 21-5 and Jo-Anne beat Lorinne 21-15.

The pairs skins competition was played on 20 March with the following results: Sportsman’s prize went to Chantal and Denis Hearnshaw, first session on 2+19 went to Jeff Bolt and Russell Shepherd while Titch Phillips and Wonke Somtseu took the second with 2+13. Second place and winning Spur vouchers were Chris Klopper and Eric Swanson with 4+14. Overall winners were Lofty Cawthorne and Archie Fisher with 4+20. The four board draw winners were Denis Hearnshaw and Jeff/Russ (R30 each) and Titch Phillips and Gwen Tait (R20 each).

Two Fridays ago, Eddy Bailey won the R800 snowball when his number 355 was drawn and he happened to be present. On that occasion Des Demmer won the lamb pack, Chris Fourie the rolled beef, Henry Jack the pork roast, Carl Van Rooyen the rump steak, Russell Shepherd the chicken pack, and Clive Symons the chicken.

Last week, neither the snowball nor the lotto was won. Lara won the lamb, Mitty Chelin the beef, Jan Fourier the pork, Mitch Mitchley the rump, Dave Leuchars the chicken pack, Dianne Swan the chicken.

Members are to note that on Sunday, 10 April, there will be live music by ‘Reflex’ from noon, and the kitchen will sell tickets for lunch at R60 per head. Members are asked to support. The kitchen has a wide variety of delicious dishes available at good prices.

A decision will be taken later as to whether the breakfast trips will be played as it clashes with the opening rounds of this year’s Oppenheimer.

All bowlers are to note that Wanderers bowls section will be hosting a new competition starting on 14 April and continuing on the second Thursday of each month thereafter. The format to be played will be a complete surprise as it will depend on how many entrants are in attendance. The more, the better it will be. But be assured, whichever format is played – out of three possibilities – it will be totally unique and completely different to anything else you have seen. And it will be great fun. It’s all drawn and will be open to men and women bowlers from any club. You just need to take your own pen. You do not need a partner or team – just pitch up in mufti. Be sure to enter this as it is enormously interactive and highly competitive with prizes and a nominal entrance fee of only R10. Entries will close at 8.50am sharp as there is quite a lot of pre-match preparation to undergo. Call organiser Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265 to enter or for more information.
