Freedom Day plans abound at Wentworth BC

THE Wentworth Bowling Club greens have been busy over the past two weeks.
Two Family and Friends development bowls competitions have been contested.
Winners on 16 March were Johan Nel and Dudley Sanders. Zoë Dougal and Ruth Petzer were awarded the biscuits. The 60/40 board was won by Johan Swan and Phil Hill. Dudley Sanders maintained his winning form on 23 March when he teamed up with Eileen du Plessis and Geanne Mitchell to take top spot on the podium. The biscuits went to Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis, Margaret Walters and Lulu Potgieter.
The development bowls initiative is driven to get members of the community to try their hand at bowls. Play starts at 3pm and an open invitation is extended to all. The club coaches are available every Wednesday at 1.30pm to assist new bowlers and help experienced bowlers iron out any bad habits that may have crept into their game. The Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls played on Friday, 18 March saw Gerald ‘Castor’ Royle, Alan Bower and Paul Pieterse show the opposition a clean pair of heels with a plus 14 advantage. In second place was the team of Graham Bransby, Ashley Sherrad and Ben Venter. The sportsman’s prize went to John Somerville, Brian Brittan and Ivor Aylward. Graham Bransby added to the day’s prizes when he won the raffled pork roast. Gwen Tait was the winner of the beef roast. Kurt Spack and Dave Carroll (snr) were the winners on the first 60/40 board and Gerald ‘Castor’ Royle and Allan Ritchie shared the spoils on the second board.
On 25 April, the Bluff Meat Supply competition was open to women. Cora van der Westhuizen showed her superior skills as a skip when she led Buck Boettiger and Bokka van der Westhuizen into top spot. In second place were Alan Richie, Tom Cloete and Ruth Petzer (a product of the club’s development initiative). Maria Cavanagh, Phil Hill and Johan Nel won the week’s sportsman’s prize. Maria Cavanagh’s cheer of delight resonated through the prize giving area when she heard her number called to take home the pork roast. Tom Cloete was the happy recipient of the beef roast. Ron ‘Bias’ Addinall and Kurt Spack were the winners on first 60/40 board and Robin de Gouviea and Marge McGuiness took the spoils from the second board.

Brian Smith and Kitty Schaefer did enough in the first session to secure the prize. Jumbo Nel and Ron ‘Bias’ Addinall were the winners of the second session. Ron added to his winnings by taking first prize from the first 60/40 board with Cora van der Westhuizen taking the second prize. The second board was shared by Lynn Howard and Kurt Spack. A delighted Margaret Walters won the raffled pork roast.
The morning of Wednesday, 30 March saw the bowlers competing for the prizes in the monthly Chicken Shack pairs take to the greens. Ken Koch teamed up with Gerald ‘Castor’ Royle to secure the day’s first prize. Hot on their heels in second place were John Somerville and Colin Nicholas. Robbie Carr and Jo-Jo Jordaan won the second session. Gerald maintained his winning streak when he won the first prize on the 60/40 board and Ellen Loots quickly put the second prize money in her purse.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast prepared by Bernie Pool and her kitchen crew, bowlers prepared for battle in the monthly Rawson’s breakfast trips competition. William Richardson, Ken Koch and Johan Nel won the first prize after a count out against the club’s green staff Luvuyo Ndava and Moses Nuba who teamed up with Ken Thomas to take the second prize. Second session went to Dennis Gericke, Joe McManus and Eric Miller. The first prize on the first 60/40 board went to Eric C from Woodlands BC with Dirk Venter pocketing the second prize. Women dominated the second board when Bernie Pool and Dawn Spack pocketed the prizes. The raffled Rawsons red wine was won by Alma and Mike, both from the sponsoring company. Dennis Gericke left the clubhouse with a big smile on his face and the bottled of raffled whiskey in his hand.
Members are to note the first and second rounds of the Roley Taylor mixed pairs competition are to be played on Saturday, 9 April, starting at 2pm. Women must check the notice board for the draw trips teams that have been posted to play on Saturday, 16 April at 1.30pm.
A bumper fun day is planned for Freedom Day on Wednesday, 27 April. This will include bowls, a buffet lunch and entertainment. Check the board for details.
Ina and Brendon Davies and Tom Cavanagh are all in the doldrums in terms of their health. They are in members’ thoughts and prayers as everyone wishes them a speedy road to recovery.
The club kitchen has been taken over by Bernie Pool, who has restructured the menu and is preparing a delicious daily special. Many positive comments have been heard about Bernie’s food preparation. The kitchen offers a take-away service as well as sit down meals for members and friends of the club. Bernie can be reached on 072-294-1392.
