Men’s interclub league gets underway

Team Hawkins win night bowls

By Bob Hayward

IT was a busy week at Wanderers Bowling Club starting with Taffy’s pairs on Wednesday when Clive Symons and Tom Cloete won the overall first prize with a 4+19.

First session with 2+13 went to Phil Pieterse and Herbie Roux while on 2+8, Chris Klopper and Eric Swanson took second session.

The spoils of the 60/40 board were shared by Lofty Cawthorne (R40) and Dave Faifer (R20). Christo Bosch won the meat, Clive Symons the wine and Ken Thomas the cap, crisps and a glass, compliments of the sponsors. Nobody had the right numbers of 3-5-10 to win the lotto which is another carry-over.

Wanderers’ teams lost both games in the midweek league which was Steve and co’s first loss.

The night bowls play-offs were also conducted the same night. Dion Audie with Kim, Nigel and Lorinne Hawkins squeaked in to win on the last end after dropping a six on the second last end and then picking up five on the last end to beat the Bluff team of Gary Moffat, Dave Le Roux, Bridget White and Lilah Nel by a single shot.

Third place went to Arnie Harper, Robin Grobler, Jeff Bolt and Rina Harper who beat Norman Moore, Tom Cloete, Denis Hearnshaw and Lynne Carlisle. Derek Stevens and co beat Neville Phillips and team for the 9th and 10th spots.

On Thursday, 14 April ‘Bob’s surprise bowls package’ made its start. With the numbers present, the only format out of three possibilities which could be played was the ‘4-3-2-1 pairs swop around’, where two 10-end sessions were played with four bowls, with skips and leads switching places in the second session. It went down extremely well, and all present vowed to be back next month, when the possibility of one of the other more unique formats may be played. First session went to Bob Hayward and Ronnie Parsonage with 2+28, second session was won by Colin Howes, Claude Newman and Herbie Roux with 2+30 and the overall winners were Chris Pozyn and Neil Smith with 4+38. Clive Symons won the pork roast, Chris Pozyn the beers and Linda Gibbs the wine. Bob Hayward, Terry Brown and Bill Addinall each won R50 on the board draw. The catering was handled efficiently by Samantha Pillay who also runs the club’s kitchen.

In Saturday’s men’s interclub league, the club’s A side won 5-2 against Stella Park A, thanks to wins by Steve Van Rooyen and Richard Hendicott and their teams. The B side got 2-5 against Stella Park B thanks to Lofty Cawthorne’s side. The C side beat Chatsworth 5-0 – Chris Klopper and Archie Fisher each winning their match. The D side got 2-3 against Winklespruit away.

One match was played in the men’s open singles in which Richard Hendicott beat Robin Grobler 21-7. Chris Klopper, who was down to play Terry Brown, scratched himself to give Terry a walkover.

In Sunday’s pairs skins, Arnie Harper and his wife Rina won the first session with 2+16. Eric Smit and Bob Hayward won the second session with 2+9. Dennis Gericke and Peter Prenger finished second overall with 4+10 and the winners were Robbie Carr and Tommy Simpkins with 4+17. Rina Harper (40) and Kim Hawkins (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.

Mike and Jackie Freeman continued on their winning way in the Oppenheimer with a resounding 28-6 victory, not needing to play the last two ends. Steve van Rooyen and Mary Rust had a close encounter but the wheels wobbled a bit on the last three ends and they unfortunately lost.

Next Wednesday, 20 April is the Lyn Wild’s pairs run by Taffy Thomas who can be reached on 073-613-9733 to confirm your entry. On Saturday afternoon the men’s ICL continues. Players should keep an eye on the board for selections, venues and so on.

Dirk Roos won the R500 snowball on Friday and Jeff Bolt won the lotto, which paid him a whopping R1,100. Meat winners were: Richard Giddie (lamb pack), Hennie G (rolled beef), Lofty B (pork roast), John Fourie (rump steak), PJ Sparks (chicken pack) and Brian Craig (chicken).
