Mixed bag of rugby results for Quins

A try by Theo Mthembu and Tarisa Mugariri adding the extras with the boot saw the Mighty Quins play some decent rugby and put the home side under pressure.

THE weekend’s Harlequins Rugby Club fixtures started off with mixed results and the senior teams travelled to Ballito Dolphins on a cloudy and very windy afternoon.

The second XV made good use of the strong wind in the first 10 minutes to run in two quick tries to lead 14–0.

Thereafter the wheels came unstuck with too many individual performances coming to the fore. The second half turned out to be a real character builder for the team as they put in an enormous effort on defense to keep the home side at bay. Only one try was conceded and the final score of 14–7 showed a well deserved with for the visiting Quins boys. Man of the match awards went to Duane Goodes and Austine Mjoli.

The first XV had a decent first half and were full value for their lead. A try by Theo Mthembu and Tarisa Mugariri adding the extras with the boot saw the Mighty Quins play some decent rugby and put the home side under pressure. Right on half time, a call went against them from a line-out and the home side managed to level the scores at the break at 10-all.

The second half was very even and a long range penalty by Ballito saw them take the lead and setup an interesting last 20 minutes. Sadly the visitors lost focus and went through the half scoreless as they conceded three tries during this period to lose 32–10. Some good moments during the match, but a loss it is and well done to the home side for never giving up. Man of the match awards went to Tarisai Mugariri and Goofy Nyakufaringwa.

On Sunday, 5 June Harlequins hosted another wonderful DRSU junior rugby day and full credit to Bok du Toit and his team for a magnificent spectacle enjoyed by all. The youngsters really enjoyed their rugby and so did the parents. The talent on display showed there is no shortage of talent in KZN, it’s just a matter of harnessing these boys and giving them proper direction going forward.

This week sees Harlequins seniors take on UKZN at home on Saturday at 2pm and 3.30pm respectively.
