OVER the last month or two, Bluff Bowling Club has had the pleasure of welcoming Wayne Ingle, Trevor Wright, Ryan Warren, Cheryl Bower, Chad Wilson, Jackie Hastings, and Sheldon Wicks as new members.
These players are wished a long and happy career in the sport.

On the first Friday of every month, the club holds a men’s competition sponsored by Eddie Human and June Foster, which is known as the 3-2-1 killer. Last week Ken Koch and Bob Hayward were the overall winners. First session winners were Herbert Hoffman and Graham Bransby while Herbie Roux and Gerald Chander Royce took second session. Sportsman’s prize went to Dirk Venter and Colin Howes. Having nine touchers gave Nolan that win and the raffle was won by Phillipe. There were two winners on the 50/50 board, G Bransby and Steve Evenwell.
As promised, there was fun and games on Friday night at the club which was enjoyed by all. Judy Marais was the lucky attendance draw winner. Next week the jackpot starts again at R180. Hilton Lassak won the raffle.
In this day and age of a tighter economy, it is difficult to gain sponsorship for competitions but Bluff BC is fortunate to have a sponsor in Acutts for its monthly pairs competition. It is possibly one of the longest running sponsorships in the district, in that they have been doing so for about 25 years and the club extends its grateful thanks to Craig Bell and his team for their support. This month’s competition was won by Terry Mickelson and Dave Carroll on four plus 29. Session prizes went to Luvou Ndava and Eric Miller for the first session and Eddie Human and Robert Mhlongo for second session. The 50/50 board was won by Dudley Sanders and the raffle went to Kitty Schaffer. This month there was an extra prize of R100 which was won by Jumbo.
Next Sunday a number of mixed trips club competitions will be played, and Kurt Spack has requested that some women who are not playing, go down in bowls dress, as he will have to do a draw for a replacement due to a vacant space.
What happens when you are moving away and getting rid of any unneeded items, but inadvertently throw away your bowls shoes? It appears the solution is to wear a pair of your wife’s shoes. Perhaps the give-away was the pink flashes on the shoes, or maybe the fact that they were too small.
Diarise the following dates: On Thursday, 16 June (public holiday) for the Diving Bell pairs; on Friday evening, 17 June all members are invited to have a drink and braai if they choose, to say farewell to Norman and Liz Robinson before they depart for the UK for good. The popular vegetable derby will be held on 1 July.
A wise man who some time ago coached a top class rugby side, once said that it was good to be friends with your opposition off the playing field, but always remember, on the field they are your opposition and friendship must take a back seat. So to the women – less ‘sweetie, darling’ on the green. It is after all the league.
