Bowlers to don their finery for July outing

Members and friends are invited to celebrate Africa’s greatest horseracing event at the club

THE couplet of Zoë Dougal and Albert van Niekerk finished Wentworth Bowling Club’s Wednesday afternoon Family and Friends development bowls competition in first place.

The biscuit prizes were awarded to Lorraine White and Johan Nel.

Lorraine added to her day’s takings by winning the draw on the 60/40 board. Vicky Williams pocketed the second prize. The purpose of the development bowls initiative is to the plant the seeds of competitive bowls in the minds of members of the community who have thought of trying their hands at the game. It is an open invitation to anyone who wishes to attempt to master the bias and conquer the green. Play starts at 3pm every Wednesday.

Friday’s Bluff Meats men’s bowls saw Graham Bransby, Robbie Carr and Ben Venter take the winning position on the podium with a plus 16 score. In second place were Adie Fuller, Brian Smith and Gerrard Hoffman. The sportsmen’s award went to Dirk Venter, Joe McNamara and Wessie van der Westhuizen. Graham Bransby continued his winning streak by taking home the raffled pork and the first prize on the first 60/40 board draw. Tom Cavanagh was rewarded for the hard work he puts in every Friday by winning the raffled beef roast. Eternally lucky Kurt Spack won the first prize on the second board draw and second prize on the first board. Hennie Marais was the recipient of the second prize on the second board draw.

This week heralds the monthly Chicken Shack pairs competition that will be contested at 9am on Wednesday morning. Thursday morning will see the teams who regularly do battle for glory take to the greens in the Rawsons breakfast trips contest. Play starts at 9am. Bowlers are reminded that the breakfast is served before bowls so they need to get to the club early to enjoy this hearty treat.

On Saturday, 2 July Greyville Race Course hosts the July Handicap, but Wentworth BC will also be a hive of activity as members and friends are invited to celebrate Africa’s greatest horseracing event by donning their most fabulous fashion and attending a fun day of racing at the club. Hats or fascinators are an essential accessory and attendees are reminded that the theme for the day is ‘leader of the pack’, so they should show which suit they will play. Will you hold a pair of aces, a full house or play your trump with a queen of hearts? All races will be shown on the big screen and fires will be lit at 11am for those wishing to take along their picnic baskets and share the fun of a bring and braai.

Monday, 4 June is the start of the week-long Dan Draper competition at Wanderers BC so activities at the club will slow down. Good bowling wishes are extended to the organisers and bowlers competing in the physically taxing tournament.

All women’s competitions have been drawn and posted on the board in the women’s rest room. Members are reminded to check the board for these.

Condolences are extended to Trish Overington and her family on the death of her husband, Roy. Everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Bernie’s kitchen provides a food service for members and offers a take away service as well as sit down meals for members and friends of the club from Tuesday to Sunday. Besides her regular menu that includes a generous Sunday roast, Bernie offers a daily special and a catering service for special functions. Call her on 072-294-1392.

A big screen is available for those wishing to watch sporting highlights. Braai and bowling facilities are available for corporate and team building functions and the hall is available for hiring. Call the club on 031-467-7103.
