Wentworth bowlers recognised at club’s prize giving ceremony

Members of Wentworth Bowling Club were honoured with trophies and certificates for their outstanding achievements.

THE 2020/ 2021 lawn bowls season ended on a high note at Wentworth Bowling Club when the annual general meeting and prize giving was held on Saturday, November 13.

Ward 66 councillor, Zoë Solomon, was the guest of honour and she, after addressing the members and their guests, presented the awards to the successful bowlers.

All club competition winners were acknowledged and received trophies and certificates, culminating in the recognition of the club champions for the year.

Eileen du Plessis received the trophy for the women’s open singles championship and the men’s open singles title went to Troy Garland. He sealed his domination on the greens by claiming Victor Ludorum status and Dawn Spack was named Victrix Ludorum for the season.

Securing a respectable plus 13 advantage at Friday’s Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls was enough for Gees Dennis, Doug Nicol and Des Hardman to take the top podium spot and pocket the prize money for first place.

In second spot were Spider Williams, Dave Carroll and the rapidly improving Ori Haripersad. He is a product of the club’s Wednesday development bowls programme and promises to become a formidable opponent in competition bowls in the future.

The sportsmen’s prize went to Dave Arnold, Nico Heymans and Albert van Niekerk.

Lady luck was on Graham Bransby’s shoulder when he selected his numbers on the raffle sheet and left the club with two substantial fresh chickens in tow.

Flo Harper, Brian Smith, Albert van Niekerk and Nico Heymans shared the spoils from the two drawn 60/ 40 board.

The completion of club competitions allows for more practice time on the greens and members will be taking advantage of this.

Any member of the community who would like to try their hand at mastering the bias is welcome to attend development bowls at 14:00 on Wednesdays.
