During sentencing, Miningi received life imprisonment for the murder, 15 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Mathebula, and 15 years for each of the three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

He was further sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, 20 years for unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and two years for unlawful possession of ammunition.

Thutloa was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 20 years for the murder of Mathebula, and 20 years for each of the three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

He also received two years’ imprisonment for defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, 20 years for unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and two years for unlawful possession of ammunition.

NPA communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole said the case relates to an armed robbery at Isabelle’s medical practice in Dobsonville, where the accused and their accomplice targeted the surgery while the doctor was attending to patients.

He said during the robbery, they stole Isabelle’s bag, licensed firearm and laptop, as well as a cellphone and motor vehicle belonging to the receptionist. Another employee’s cellphone was also taken.

Mohlatlole further stated that Dr Isabelle was fatally shot during the robbery, while their accomplice was killed during an exchange of gunfire.

“The surviving accused fled the scene in the stolen vehicle with the stolen items. After discovering that their accomplice had died, they abandoned his body in Alexandra before buying petrol and setting the getaway vehicle alight in an attempt to destroy evidence and evade police detection,” Mohlatlole said.

Both men were arrested on March 21, 2024, after investigations by police.

Two unlicensed firearms were recovered, while fingerprint and DNA evidence linked them to the crime scene. One of the accused also made an admission following his arrest.

During sentencing proceedings, the accused pleaded for leniency, claiming they did not anticipate that anyone would die during the robbery.

Thutloa further claimed he had been misled into taking part in the crime.

However, the State presented victim impact evidence from Dr Isabelle’s sister-in-law, who described the devastating effect his death had on his family.

She told the court that his wife suffered greatly after his murder and that the medical practice was forced to close, causing both emotional and financial hardship for the family and the community that relied on his services.

Senior State Advocate Rotondwa Phungo argued that the crimes were carefully planned and executed, saying the accused had deliberately armed themselves before targeting the doctor’s surgery.

The court agreed with the State’s arguments, finding that the robbery was premeditated and that both accused had previous convictions. The court also found that they had failed to show genuine remorse for their actions.

The NPA said the sentences demonstrate its commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and ensuring justice for victims of serious crimes.
