Soccer tournament supports local teams

The tournament showcased incredible performances from a range of talented teams, with Dobsonville Gardince United rising to the top to claim the Under-13 division, while BSP Production impressed with their dominance to secure the title in the Under-17 division.

The Winnie Radebe Foundation recently concluded its soccer tournament with an intense final and semi-final held at Green Village Soccer Field on April 21.

Eight football teams from various areas around Soweto, including Lufhereng, Braamfischerville, Dobsonville, Green Village, Emdeni and Naledi took advantage of the opportunity to showcase their talented players.

The tournament showcased incredible performances from a range of talented teams, with Dobsonville Gardince United rising to the top to claim the U13 division, while BSP Production impressed with their dominance to secure the title in the U17 division.

Speaking to Urban News founder of the tournament, Winnie Radebe said the purpose of the tournament was to provide a positive and engaging activity for young boys during the holidays, helping to steer them away from negative influences and poor decisions by keeping them active and focused through sport.

“Tournaments like this help us support a boy child as well as local teams who often struggle to present their talents to bigger organisations due to financial limitations.

“The platform we’ve created plays an essential role in bridging this gap, providing players with an opportunity to highlight their skills, potential, and talent,” said Radebe.

Expressing her hopes, Radebe shared that she wishes one day larger teams and stakeholders can come to recognise the talent in local communities, as the children participating in these tournaments are exceptionally skilled and well-developed.

Harmony Gold Mining played a crucial role in sponsoring the tournament.

The winning teams were rewarded with new soccer kits, soccer balls, medals, trophies, and training equipment.

Coach of Dobsonville Gardince United, Jabu Mbuli said, “We face many financial challenges, so being part of the tournament was a great help in providing soccer kits. We are truly thankful for this opportunity.”
