Soweto paddlers take on the waves at world championships
Soweto’s young paddlers braved fierce winds and rolling waves as they took on top international athletes at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban.
Soweto’s paddlers recently took to the ocean in Durban for the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships, joining top surf ski athletes from across the globe for an unforgettable experience on the high seas.
Representing SCARC in the S2 race, the young paddlers faced powerful winds and rough waves that turned the ocean into a true test of courage and endurance.
“For three of our junior paddlers, it was their very first ocean race, and they showed incredible bravery stepping into unfamiliar waters alongside world-class athletes. The conditions were far from easy.

“Gusty winds and rolling swells challenged even the most experienced competitors. Some of our boys came out of the event shaken but stronger, realizing that ocean racing demands a whole new level of skill and mental toughness.

“A few have decided they’ll stick to river and dam races for now, while others are already eager to get back into the surf for another go,” said Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union.
Despite the challenges, the SCARC team walked away with something far greater than medals: experience, resilience and pride.
“Competing at an international event of this scale, surrounded by top paddlers from around the world, was an inspiration for everyone involved.”
Nkosi Mzolo, a long-time coach and manager of the Soweto-based club and Fleurhof resident, enjoyed the surf until a wave destroyed his boat and put an end to his race — but not his fun. He still embraced the event and the experiences that he and his team thrive on.
