World Vision holds door-to door campaign

World Vision SA went on a door to door Child Protection Campaign. The campaign coincides with the start of the nationwide 16 Days of Activism against women and children abuse.

World Vision SA Orlando East Branch held a door-to-door Child Protection Campaign last Friday.

The campaign coincided with the start of the nationwide 16 Days of Activism against child and women abuse.

Over 70 volunteers visited 1500 homes spreading the word and educating residents about child protection.

Residents were told about the importance of supervising what their children are watching on TV, and monitoring what they get up to on social networks.

World Vision and other organisations marched to Orlando Police Station last year during Child Protection week to hand over a memorandum to the station commander.

“Since we handed over the memorandum the number of reported cases of abuse has increased meaning that more people are reporting such cases.

“What we are now struggling with is the follow up procedure after the cases have been reported,” said Tholakele Zulu-Solomon project coordinator.

She said that there is also an increase in cases of children raping other children, and this is partly attributed to social media and unsupervised viewing of television.

“Parents need to pay attention to what their children are viewing on TV and not to use television as a babysitter,” said Zulu- Solom.
