'Protect the eldery'

A day care centre for the elderly in our community.

Umuntu Ngabantu Organization has launched the ‘let the elderly be protected’ project and invites the elderly in Zola and surrounding areas to join.

Aimed as a protection mechanism, the project is going to materialise as a day care which protects the elderly by keeping them indoors and offers skills and activities to keep them company.

The idea for the project came to light for Sipho Munyai upon realizing that the elderly in the community are faced by numerous challenges and an intervention would help.

“Being alone in the house when children are at school, or leaving the house unlocked, or going alone to fetch pension money are some of the many things which make the elderly of our community feel victimized and vulnerable to crime.

“We started this day care to create a safe place for the elderly where they come to the centre during the day and our care givers go to those who cannot walk,” Munyai said.

Activities offered in the project include poetry reading, sawing, bead works, language articulation, paper mosaic, theatre, cooking and wax creations.

The day care runs from 2pm till 4pm three times a week at Zola Three.

The day care will open on January 28 for any interested people and registrations are open till February 7.

Those who have skills in presentations, teaching and facilitation or have experience in home-based care are invited to volunteer their skills to help grow the project and benefit the community.

They are asked to email or hand deliver their resumes to umuntungabantu@gmail.com or 166 Nokeri Street Zola Ext.
