Wheelchairs donated to residents
Three Jabavu residents get the freedom to move around easier, thanks to wheelchair donation.
In celebration of the National Disability Rights Awareness Month, three residents of Jabavu were given wheelchairs to help better their daily living conditions.
This initiative was made possible by Rite Aid Health Care and the Ward 35 Democratic Alliance (DA).
Chairperson of this ward, Jabu Sithole said that these are beneficiaries from White City and Central Western Jabavu.
“One of these women was sitting at home with no wheelchair while the guy’s wheelchair was not working and could not be closed.
“Harriet More, then asked to help from her work and they donated one wheelchair and Rotary International donated three wheelchairs.”
Political head, Tsepo Mhlongo said that they are doing this to show that they care as they believe in service delivery and that a good government looks after its seniors and sick.
Beneficiary Dorothy Masenya (84) said that she was very grateful for the wheelchair as it will make it easier for her to move around.
Alfred Ntombela (57) who also got a wheelchair said he has had polio from a young age and at 5-years-old he couldn’t walking properly.
When he got to 40-years-old, he stopped walking completely as this condition had affected his spine.
“The wheelchair I was previously using could not close, so I couldn’t go to the clinic or to attend other functions.
“In January I then applied for a wheelchair at the clinic and they referred me to the hospital, but I have been waiting ever since.
“I am very happy for this donation and feel free as I can now go to church, the hospital and to visit family,” he said.
