Where are the men?
The uncomfortable truth is that youth look up to people who steal cars.
Women were the most active during a community meeting held with citizens from Extension Two and the Local Drug Action Committee, where they issued warnings to alleged drug dealers.
Deputy chairperson of LDAC Allistair Fredericks asked where are the men of the community.
“Whenever we are busy with activities, especially confrontational, men are always absent.
“Women are always in the forefront in the advancement of their community,” Fredericks said.
Sebastian De Villiers, chairman of the Eldorado Park True Men’s Forum says the absence of men is because they are ashamed of their status.
“Women are more involved but it should be the other way around.
“Men don’t want to own up because they may be ashamed because they cannot be the providers,” de Villiers said.
Pastor Eden Constance said the absence of fathers is because of the prevalence of drugs.
“Morals and standards have dropped and now fathers want to be as young as their children, you can’t compete with your children.
“Men need to understand their role which is to be the head and provider,” Constance said.
Councillor Peter Rafferty challenges every household to the 30 minute challenge where they turn off their television and just talk.
The uncomfortable truth, according to Fredericks, is that youth look up to people who steal cars.
He encourages men and young boys to look at what defines them.
“What defines you? Is it your bank balance? Is it your drive?
“Stand up and believe in yourself, your purpose and greatness,” Fredericks said.
De Villiers encourages men to take their stand against issues like domestic violence.
“If you change your image you will change your life,” said de Villiers.
Constance says absent fathers should come to their senses and realise that they cannot do it without God.
“The family that prays together stays together,” Constance said.
Men are urged to take their rightful place at home and in their communities.
“There will be a ripple effect where others would want to follow,” Rafferty said.
