Drama, dance, literature and the power of South African heritage was the theme of the day at the Tshiawelo Library at their heritage event hosted last week.
Former writer, actor and performing artist Sizwe Vilakazi owner of the Let’s Play Children’s Theatre in partnership with the library for a joint event.
“Our aim is to activate the children’s creativity through creative play because a creative mind will always see alternatives in life; also to create an awareness to use the library due to the problem with illiteracy in this country and we wanted to address these issues.
We thought it would be fitting to do a 10 year anniversary together with our heritage celebrations, but needed to wait until schools were closed so our performers could be available,” said Vilakazi.
Veterans, senior citizens, residents and workers from the Chiawelo community hall filled the hall with cheers as they watched children as young as six perform legendary music.
“We are a non-governmental organisation that wants to generate creative thinkers in the generations to come, develop the right side of the brain that is being neglected.
Our organisation not only offers performing arts it also offers an after school programme to assist with literacy and numeracy and we help with homework as well.”
Councilor Jabu Mnisi was also present and was happy to welcome proceedings.
Kamo Phakedi, a pupil part of the organisation said, “I came here in 2014, it’s been nice and I’ve learned the importance of respecting our elders and to respect other people’s cultures.
Karabo Mafure another pupil said, “I joined in 2012 when I was in Grade 3, and I just love the dancing.”
The organisation is situated at the Chiawelo Community Hall next to the Tshiawelo Library from 3:30pm to 5:30pm from Monday to Thursday.
The library is available for all residents of the community.
