The City of Johannesburg Region D, Citizen Relationship Management Unit in Partnership with Harmony Gold Mine, Randfontein handed over 100 school shoes to the less privileged school learners at an event held at Sophie Masite, Council Chamber- Jabulani Civic Centre.
This is an effort to address the quality of lifestyle survey that was conducted by the City of Johannesburg which found that there are some wards that are less privileged. Citizen Relationship Management Unit then went to these wards and identified 10 schools. The school principals from these primary schools were requested to identify 10 needy learners per school.
These schools were:
- Mlaetsa Primary – Jabavu
- Leresche Primary – Orlando East
- Ethembelihle Primary – Dobsonville
- Tiakeni Primary – Chiawelo
- Goza Primary – Freedom Park
- Phiri Primary – Phiri
- Shomang Primary – Orlando West
- Emseni Primary – Emndeni
- Noordgesig Primary – Noordgesig
- Batsogile Primary – Klipspruit
‘The aim was to provide school uniforms to needy children in Primary Schools. Namely; school shoes, uniforms, and school bags. This is in line with the City of Joburg’s mandate to ensure that the City is responsive to the needs of the community.
The initiative also aims to inspire school children about the importance of going to school and not to be prejudiced because they come from disadvantaged backgrounds” said Lillian Ndlovu of City of Johannesburg.
The City has various programmes similar to this, they intend to grow this programme and make it an annual event.
“We are also discussing the possibility of having the event twice a year, in January and in June, where we will donate winter uniforms,” said Ndlovu
