Using carpentry skills to empower young people
Lebuso's initiative is aimed at empowering the youth in order to combat the high rate of unemployment.
Youth unemployment remains a nightmare in Soweto, however, there are those in the community who are trying to overcome it. Lucas Lebuso, who owns a company called Hidden Guys Top Furniture which specializing in carpentry has established a carpentry school at Hlalefeng Primary School in Pimville where he trains the unemployed youth who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and those that are willing to learn about Carpentry skills.
Lebuso gets some assistance from Ibikwe Victor Chimeze the Managing director of the company, to train the learners. Lebuso and Chimeze train these learners without any electricity and these are some of the challenges they face.
“The initiative is aimed at empowering the youth, hence there are some social ills that the unemployed youth faces in our community, we also need sponsorship from relevant companies that could aid us to buy more material, machinery, for us to enlarge our school as we need our school to be spacious and to be able to pay our learners’ stipends for food and transportation,” said lebuso.

Lebuso said he bought the whole material from his own pocket and he also turned isolated, vandalized toilets at Hlalefang to a normal building for his school with the permission from the Pimville ward 22 Councillor, Elizabeth Mabaso.
“We hope to benefit from this whole project and it is such a great opportunity for us to learn such skills as there is a very high unemployment rate and some form of donation would be highly appreciated in order for Mr Lebuso to empower more and more people,” said one of the students Lesego Raliru.
Any young person that is interested in carpentry is more than welcome to come and apply, there is enough room for young people that need to empower themselves and avoid malicious behaviour and challenges. For more enquiries contact Lucas Lebuso on 082-964-8316/081-408-4397.
