Books for children in Eldorado Park Extension One

Howard, who was born and raised in Eldorado Park, has officially published her first children’s book titled 'Neli the rain dancer' and visited the PUSH Centre in Extension One to distribute it to the children at the centre.

Community activist Finley Watson and book author Elaine Howard gave back to the Eldorado Park community with children in mind, the duo believes that reading is the gateway to opening the minds of the youngsters living in the community.

Watson, who organises events  said that this year he wanted to do something different.

“As someone passionate about sports, I usually plan sports events on this day, but this year, I felt we needed to give back to expand the minds of our youth. It’s important to keep them motivated in different ways,” said Watson.

“Even though physical exercise is important, developing our minds is just as important and that is where Elaine Howard comes in, she is proof that anything is possible, you just need to believe and put in the work,” he added.

Howard, who was born and raised in Eldorado Park, has officially published her first children’s book titled ‘Neli the rain dancer’ and visited the PUSH Centre in Extension One to distribute it to the children at the centre.

“It’s so important for children to know that they are more than their circumstances. I remember being a little girl living at the flats in Extension One. There were many distractions and gang violence was a reality. But I persevered and believed in myself and that’s the most important tool,” said Howard.

“Having been blessed with three children, I decided to write a children’s book in an environment that most of them can understand and identify with. As the books character Neli, I would like children to know that they each possess a special gift in them. They should never allow their circumstances or environment to determine what they want for their future, and to learn the virtues of forgiveness,” she added.
