St. Ives Primary School in Klipspruit West remains committed to road safety and scholar patrol all year round.
The scholar patrol coordinator concluded by saying that she would like to thank all the teachers who remain dedicated to assisting the learners.
With so many parents and transport drivers dropping of children every morning and picking them up in the afternoon, it is no secret that dangerous traffic congestion occurs around schools at this time.
That is why, like many other schools, St. Ives Primary School, situated in Klipspruit West remains committed to road safety and scholar patrol all year round.
Shithole, who is the scholar patrol coordinator at the school said that she believes the Scholar Patrol Programme at the school not only benefits the learners but the motorists and community at large.

“Programmes like these have a ripple effect. I say this because the skills taught to the learners are eventually passed on to the community and motorists. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Shithole.
“Very often our children just cross the road without looking or paying attention but the scholar patrol team encourages learners to be more vigilant. The transport drivers have also learned to obey the rules of the road,” she added.
Dineo Maseko, a representative from the Department of Community Safety visited the school on Monday, October 7 to see how the scholar patrol team operates.

“I am so proud of each one of these learners who have remained committed to ensuring the safety of their fellow learners,” said Maseko.
When asked about the selection process for the scholar patrol programme, Maseko said that the idea is to rotate the learners, ultimately giving different learners a chance to be a part of the team.
“Consent forms are sent to the parents, so they are aware that their children are part of the team. We also require the scholar patrol learners to be at school early to set up safety points,” said Maseko.
Both Shithole and Maseko raised concerns about Klipspruit Valley road.

“This is a big intersection and many of our learners cross it daily. The traffic lights have been out for many months now, it is not safe for our learners,” said Shithole.
The scholar patrol coordinator concluded by saying that she would like to thank all the teachers who remain dedicated to assisting the learners.
“I would also like to thank our principal, Illana Heradien who supports our initiative 100%,” said Shithole.
