Edward Mandla Simanga(22) from Freedom Park using sports to tackle social ills
Being a professional boxer Simanga believes that he can use sport to keep the youth motivated.

22-year-old Edward Mandla Simanga is passionate about the Freedom Park community. With the youth in mind, Simanga dreams of changing the narrative of his community and many communities alike.

Simanga held his first sporting event at Thandanani Car Wash themed #Mr60xing Movement, the sporting event was aimed at empowering the youth and showcasing his boxing talent.

“My mission is to identify sporting talent within the community, I want to nurture that talent. The goal is not only to focus on boxing but various sporting codes, I believe that keeping our youngsters busy and active is the only we can keep them motivated and focused on the right things. The minute we become bored, that is where mischief creeps in,” said Simanga.
“I didn’t have it easy when growing up, I wasn’t always focused but boxing saved my life. It turned my life around and I want that for our youth. I want to encourage them to find that one positive thing that will help them achieve success,” he added.
An awareness march led by Simanga took place on the day.

“The goal was to campaign against drug abuse, alcohol abuse as well as the killing and abuse of women and children,” Simanga.
The 22-year-old also said that the reason why sports aren’t taken seriously is that there aren’t proper facilities.
“The goal is the actively start working on creating safer spaces for the youth to use for sports and recreation. I urge residents to assist in making this possible,” he concluded.
