Sebetsa shines at Sasko Shap Shooters schools tournament

The highly contested tournament was played at the Maponya Mall in Klipspruit on Saturday where were artificial pitches had been set up.

Sebetsa-O-Thole-Moputso High School from Snake Park in Soweto walked away with a R5000 cash prize after clinching the winner’s trophy at the first Sasko Shap Shooters schools tournament. The highly contested tournament was played at the Maponya Mall in Klipspruit on Saturday where artificial pitches had been set up. Sebetsa knocked out Pimville’s Progress Comprehensive High School to set up a final clash with Fons Luminis Secondary School, who had swept away Jabulani Secondary in their semi-final clash earlier in the day.

The final itself was a thrilling encounter between two schools that had put out stellar performances throughout the day. Fons started brightly but it was Sebetsa who drew first blood on their very first attempt at goal through Ntokozo Tshabalala. Conceding seemed to galvanise Fons who started piling on the pressure and managed to find an equaliser to force the match into extra time. Once more, Fons looked the better side but it was Sebetsa who took their chance when Tshabalala found the fons defence exposed at the back and finished neatly. With nothing to lose, Fons sent numbers forward and Sebetsa Goalkeeper Ntokozo Mlambo had to pull off a string of saves to keep his school ahead until the match official blew the final whilst. Speaking to Soweto Urban after the game, Sebetsa Coach Shadrack Manganyi said he was proud that his team stuck to their plan.

“We played very well and did everything we planned. Before the final we had to remind each other that we come from Snake Park, we have come too far to lose and I think that hunger is what motivated the boys and got us over the line,” Manganyi said.

The tournament welcomed 130 learners from 19 participating Soweto schools. Sasko’s Head of Marketing, Jackie Pillay said it was important to give back to communities.

“We  understand how important soccer is to our communities. What better way to bring back our kids to the soccer field than a four aside where kids from different schools can get together for the love of the game and enjoy a beautiful day out.”

Finalists, Fons walked away with an R3000 while 3rd placed Jabulani took home R2000. Follow Us Here: Catch the latest news by visiting our other platforms:
