During the road block, vehicles were inspected if they were roadworthy.
This road block led to an arrest of 30 people. 12 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, 18 undocumented foreign nationals were taken in to be processed by officials from the Department of Home Affairs and three cars that were suspected to be stolen/hijacked/used in the commission of crime were seized.

The roadblock was a result of the rising crime rate in Protea.
“We are here in Protea because crime is rapidly rising in this area. They have a problem of carjacking, business and house robberies. While burglary on houses is also high, the murderers are also high,” said Lieutenant Mawela.
One of the biggest challenges that the community is complaining about is the usage of drugs.

“There are known spots to the communities whereby they say you find drug addicts or Nyaope boys.
“I want to assure the community that by tonight we will visit those spots as the community has brought it to our attention,” said the commissioner.
In fighting crime in the area, Mawela mentioned that they have resourced the police station.
“I have also given additional vehicles and we have observed and recognised that the area is growing, we have also recognised that the police station is not centrally based, it is almost in Moroka, but the process are in place whereby we are trying to move the police station to a central place,” he added.
“I have also allocated them with a mobile truck which is meant to be deployed in those areas, especially the far extensions, so that the community can easily access it.”
The department has increased the capacity of crime intelligence on the ground, working together with the patrollers and other community structures so that they collect information and deal with those who are supplying drugs to the youth as it is a serious problem in the community. More than 270 other people were arrested for various crimes in Johannesburg District over the weekend.
