After waiting for a while, the audience welcomed Modise, the person of the moment on a high note with a standing innovation.
The book which was published by Gingergoat publishing talks about the former captain’s experience as a top African footballer and fighting inequalities in an antiquated patriarchal system governing the beautiful game in Mzansi.
She details her struggles to understand and find herself as a black lesbian woman and the battle of being Portia Modise.
Addressing the crowd, Modise jokingly said, “I’m not good with reading, I was playing football.”
Defining what football means to her she said, “Football is poem and it is life. I had a huge journey with South African people and the misunderstanding that they had about my passion for the game needed to be addressed through a book so that they can understand me. I wanted them to get the feel that if parents do not fight now, their children will end up experiencing what I went through.”

Modise also wrote this book as wakeup call to South Africans especially the young girls in football. “I owned my truth since I started playing football because I know how hard it is being Portia Modise but through my book, I hope to change how people perceive the sport. My aim is not only to inspire the next generation but most importantly to emphasise the importance of equality.”
According to the writer and publisher of the book, Bandile Sikwane, Modise is an iconic legend of the game. “It was obvious after speaking to her that to get her story across we needed to do something very different. We opted for an interactive multimedia book because it allows Portia to connect with her audience in a very intimate and engaging way,” added Sikwane.
