Eldorado Park is where the #YESMovement began

The #YesMovement gains momentum in different parts of the country in bid to bring integrated solutions against the high violent crimes in disadvantaged communities.

Eldorado Park has endured months of misery as a result of the community’s spiraling gun violence and constant homicides.

In September, a large number of activists, community members, Councillors and stakeholders decided it was time to set up a camp outside the police station in the hopes of receiving better policing.

But after 85 days, some in Eldorado Park are still frightened. Residents live in constant fear of death while walking to the store or a friend’s or family member’s house.

This year, a total of 29 individuals have died, and numerous others have been hurt and are currently recovering at home or in hospitals.

Cheryl Pillay, Dereleen James, and an activist launched the #YESMovement for Eldorado Park on September 11, but it gradually spread to the rest of South Africa after they decided they had enough.

Following the fatal shootings of two people by unidentified assailants a few weeks ago in Westbury, leaders came together and are also camping outside the Sophiatown SAPS, while Eldos activists will not move till police have listened to their plea for help.

#YESMovement media spokesperson, Charis Pretorius said, “It is unacceptable that our people are dying on the streets of historically disadvantaged communities at such an alarming rate.

“SAPS has failed us, and we can no longer allow for these stats to keep climbing like this.”

She added that the station commander of SAPS in Eldorado Park needs to be replaced by a capable individual, who has the best interest of the community at heart and who will not take credit for the work of other security teams on the ground to bolster his stats.

“We endeavour to hold prayer services most Sundays as part of the outreach that is done by the peaceful protestors,” Pretorius ended.
