Local shop owner caught with unlicensed products

Accompanied by law enforcement officials from the JMPD and the SAPS, they visited houses and spaza shops suspected of selling medicine without licences.

As a result of the joint stakeholder operation, a 31 year old shopkeeper was arrested and his spaza shop closed down.
This after large volumes of unauthorised pain medication was found at his spaza shop and he could not explain why he had it and where he got it.

Other spaza shops were visited as well where officials from Environmental Health and the City found that expired good were being sold.
The discovered expired goods were destroys and the spaza shop owners were instructed to close shop.

MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku joined the operation and expressed disappointment over the hygiene conditions of the visited spaza shops.
All of them were not cleaned with a thick layer of dust covering goods which are sold to the community.
The large amount of expired goods discovered also included baby formula and other products used to feed babies.
Eldorado Park police spokesperson, Sergeant Roxanne Gibb confirmed that an arrest was made during the operation.
“As a result of the joint and disruptive operation, a 31-year-old male and local tuck-shop owner was arrested in Eldorado Park,” explained Gibb.
“This after law enforcement searched the shop and found high volumes of various unregistered medication.
‘These were schedule two pain medicine and schedule five anti-depressants and pain medication.
“The owner was not licensed or authorised to distribute and sell these medicines.”

The spaza shop owner was arrested and detained at the Eldorado Park Police Station for contravening the Medicines and Related Substance Act of 1965.
The act prohibits anyone from dispensing or making medicine without a license.

This was one of many operations set to take place in the greater Eldorado Park policing precinct as community leaders together with law enforcement move to fight the use of lean and illegal distribution of medicine in the community.
