Flooding on Elias Motsoaledi Road causes chaos
It was reported that one side of the road floods after heavy rains and disrupts cars and households.
After the week’s heavy rains, the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Environmental and Infrastructure Department chairperson Vhengani Munyayi and PR Clr Kabelo Moatshe heeded the complaints of residents of Ward 47 on Elias Motsoaledi Road, where one side of the road has been flooded for days and disrupts traffic.
It was reported that there was chaos for a few days because cars had to move to the oncoming side of the road, and community members feared for their houses because the water also flooded their homes.

Munyai said, “As part of the Environmental and Infrastructure Department, I saw it fit to ensure this gets looked into.
“We are pleading with the city, especially the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), to take a closer look into this because it causes aggravated drivers who see cars going the opposite direction in their lane, which could lead to accidents. It is also scary that structures like our homes are affected because of this.”
Salon owner Vuyani Cele shared how this affects business and how the structure of his salon is deteriorating, from the door frames to the walls.

‘’This has been going on for the past five years I’ve been here. It is such a shame because this means we lose business.

Clients want to park their cars next to the salon, but it is impractical to do so because this side is where the road floods, so we are losing money.

This has been reported to the JRA, and all they do is come and drain the water, but it is clear that there is a problem bigger than just that,’’ said Cele.
Engineers have been asked to resurvey the location and find a permanent solution to the crisis.
