One of the two vehicles recovered during the operation at the premises reported to be hijacked in Sandton.

The five men are suspected to be responsible for Cash-In-Transit robberies and courier vehicles robberies.

Police from Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team received intelligence about the armed suspects that were en-route to commit a robbery.

According to the information, the police intercepted the suspects while still in Soweto and a search was conducted.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 38, were arrested after they were found with three rifles, a pistol, magazines loaded with scores of ammunition, two cars that are reported to be hijacked and a jammer.

Police also recovered two of the cars at the premises, a BMW and Hyundai H100 bakkie which were also reported to be hijacked in Sandton and Linden this year.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela applauded the police for foiling yet another aggravated robbery.

“I am pleased with the manner in which the police handled this information and arrested the suspects before they could commit another crime.

“The firearms will be sent for ballistic tests and suspects profiled to establish the crimes that they were involved in,” said Lieutenant General Mawela.

The suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected hijacked motor vehicles.
