Gunman nabbed with unlicensed firearm following high-speed chase in Freedom Park

Shots fired in public prompt quick action from Eldorado Park officers, resulting in an arrest during a police operation.

A suspect (48) was arrested on charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and discharging a weapon in public, following a high-speed chase that led to the discovery of the weapon, at Freedom Park, on February 9.

The incident unfolded at about 22:20 during Operation Teka Hinkwaswo, a routine operation by members of the Eldorado Park Police Station’s Crime Prevention Unit in collaboration with Gauteng Traffic Wardens.

Police received a tip-off of occupants of a VW Polos firing shots in Freedom Park.

Officers responded, spotting a suspicious silver VW Polo with no registration plates and six occupants, leading to a search and subsequent arrests.

According to the police’s media liaison officer, as the police approached, the driver made a sudden U-turn and sped off.

48-year-old suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Freedom Park, on February 9.

“Officers pursued the vehicle, which eventually stopped. The driver complied with police instructions and exited the vehicle,” the liaison added.

“A subsequent search of the car and the driver uncovered a silver .38 Special revolver, hidden in the driver’s waistband.

“The firearm was loaded with live ammunition and contained four empty cartridges. The driver was unable to produce a firearm license, prompting his immediate arrest.”

The suspect is in custody, facing charges of illegal firearm possession, ammunition and discharging a weapon in public.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
