City of Johannesburg councillor gunned down in Emdeni
Police confirm that three armed suspects stormed Clr Buthelezi’s home, shot him in his home and fled, sparking an urgent citywide manhunt in Soweto.
Ward 130 councillor Thulani Buthelezi (49) was fatally shot at his home in Emdeni, Soweto, on June 7. According to police, three unidentified armed men entered the property, opened fire on Buthelezi while he was in his room, and fled the scene.
Naledi police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
This incident marks the second killing of a Johannesburg councillor under violent circumstances in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of public representatives.

City of Johannesburg Speaker, Councillor Nobuhle Mthembu, expressed shock over Buthelezi’s death, describing it as a brutal and senseless act.
“The ongoing threat of violence against councillors is a painful reminder of the dangers elected officials face daily while serving their communities,” she said.
Mthembu also paid tribute to Buthelezi’s dedication to his constituents in Emdeni, Naledi and Doornkop.
Known for his active participation in council debates and cross-party cooperation, Buthelezi was respected for his integrity and commitment to service delivery.
Law enforcement agencies have been urged to act swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Public representatives must be able to carry out their constitutional duties without fearing for their lives,” Mthembu said.
Police are appealing to anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward.
