Buildings in Johannesburg CBD raided

A SAPS-led multi-disciplinary operation in Johannesburg CBD on July 5 resulted in the arrest of 181 suspects and the closure of five illegal liquor outlets, following raids on hijacked and unsafe buildings.

The District Commissioner of Johannesburg, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, led a multi-disciplinary operation in collaboration with stakeholders to raid hijacked and dilapidated buildings in Johannesburg CBD on July 5.

The operation began with a parade of force multipliers including various SAPS units and the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Social Development, JMPD, Gauteng traffic wardens, City Power, CPF and patrollers.

The forces moved into the CBD and Moffat View, raiding nine hijacked houses. The houses are dilapidated and have been declared unsafe for human habitation.

A total of 181 suspects, including 150 illegal immigrants, were arrested for offences such as possession of drugs, assault GBH, robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, among others.

Eleven liquor outlets were visited, and five were closed for non-compliance with the Liquor Act.

During the arrests, police also seized an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, liquor, crystal meth, nyaope, and money.
