The police say more than 60 suspects were arrested during a multidisciplinary Operation Shanela.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a weekday multidisciplinary Operation Shanela in Soweto led to the arrest of over 60 suspects on Thursday, August 28.

According to SAPS, officers carried out stop-and-search operations, roadblocks and liquor outlet inspections across Orlando and Diepkloof.

One suspect was arrested after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a search at the Diepkloof Hostel. A further eight suspects were apprehended for the possession of drugs.

Working in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, the police arrested 46 undocumented immigrants during a roadblock conducted on Chris Hani Road.

Authorities also shut down four illegal liquor outlets, which SAPS described as significant generators of crime in the affected areas.

SAPS has reiterated its commitment to tackling crime in communities through ongoing Operation Shanela deployments across Gauteng and the rest of the country.
