Gauteng police officer accused of murder denied bail

A Gauteng police officer accused of murdering his friend in Pimville was denied bail by the Lenasia Magistrate's Court, as investigations by IPID continue.

A Gauteng police constable accused of murdering his friend has been denied bail by the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.

Constable Tshepiso Lloyd Malapane (33), stationed at Dobsonville Police Station, is alleged to have been drinking with his friend, 27-year-old Lebogang Sekhute, at a tavern in Pimville on September 21 at about 22:00, when he became involved in an altercation with another patron.

Malapane left the tavern but later returned, allegedly with his service firearm. Sekhute reportedly tried to intervene and stop the confrontation, after which Malapane allegedly shot him multiple times. Sekhute was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

Malapane was arrested immediately and detained at Kliptown Police Station. On October 2, the court denied him bail, and the case was postponed to November 5 for further investigation.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping welcomed the court’s decision, saying it would allow investigators to finalise their work without interference.

“IPID remains committed to ensuring that police officers who commit crimes face the full might of the law,” he said.
