JMPD launches intensified freeway patrols to improve road safety

As part of a preventive road safety drive, JMPD is strictly enforcing traffic regulations on Johannesburg’s major freeways to curb dangerous driving behaviour.

The JMPD has escalated its efforts on all major freeways in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), where its unit and speed unit are working to ensure compliance with laws governing freeways.

According to JMPD, the operation is part of an ongoing road safety campaign aimed at decreasing accidents, reckless conduct, and preventable deaths, especially during high-traffic periods. The police are closely monitoring major roads and ensuring a zero-tolerance policy on traffic offences.

Motorists are warned that offenders will be taken action against for:
* Speeding
* Reckless or negligent driving
* Use of the emergency shoulder when driving
* In scenarios
* Driving unlicensed or unroadworthy vehicles

JMPD has, however, emphasised that these steps are not punitive but preventive, aimed at ensuring the safety of road users when using freeways within the CoJ.

Road Safety Tips

* Obey posted speed signs and adjust your speed in accordance with road and weather conditions.

* Do not drive on the shoulder of a road, except when instructed to by a law enforcement official.
* Your car must be roadworthy and in good working condition.
* Always buckle your seat belt and make sure passengers buckle theirs, too.
* Avoid driving while intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, and never make use of any distractions like mobile phones when operating vehicles.
* Arrange all trips in advance so as not to rush and take unnecessary risks.
