Approximately 200 persons with disabilities joined the programme for the educational and recreational outing.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) hosted a National Disability Rights Day programme at the Johannesburg Zoo on December 4.

This day focused on empowering people living with disabilities through education and establishing a platform for engagement between the city and the disabled community.

Approximately 200 people with disabilities attended and could explore the zoo exhibits and socialise with peers from diverse backgrounds, as part of psychosocial support.

Participants expressed their gratitude for the experience, with one attendee sharing that it was their first visit to the Johannesburg Zoo.

They shared their joy in seeing different animals and the excitement of travelling on the event bus. This was a reminder of how access to public recreational spaces remains a barrier for many people with disabilities.

The key objectives and outcomes of the event included:
• Promoting social inclusion and reducing the stigma associated with disability.
• Celebrating the achievements, talents and contributions of persons with disabilities.
• Encouraging society to recognise persons with disabilities as equal citizens deserving of respect and opportunity.
• Providing psychological support through interactive engagement and recreational exposure.
• Advocating for accessible and inclusive public environments and services.
