City Power condemns intimidation of teams during Klipspruit operations

City Power has raised alarm over growing intimidation of its workers in Klipspruit West, warning that continued disruption could lead to area-wide electricity disconnections.

City Power has condemned what it describes as ongoing intimidation and obstruction of its operations in Klipspruit West and other parts of the south of Johannesburg.

The utility says its meter-reading teams were aggressively confronted and unlawfully prevented from carrying out their duties in Klipspruit West on December 2. Similar incidents have also been reported in Eldorado Park and Ennerdale.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the interference threatens both service delivery and the overall stability of the electricity network.

“Our teams are being intimidated and unlawfully blocked from doing critical work that ensures accurate billing and reliable electricity supply,” he says.

“We cannot allow individuals who do not represent the community to derail our operations and put paying customers at risk.”

According to City Power, only 61 out of 1 380 customers in Klipspruit are currently buying electricity legally, placing significant pressure on the system and contributing to frequent outages.

Mangena says restoring accountability is essential. “Meter readings and normalisation are vital, and anyone who interferes is sabotaging progress the community desperately needs.”

A criminal complaint has been opened against the suspect allegedly involved in the disruptions, and the utility is calling for law-enforcement intervention.

Mangena cautions that persistent obstruction may force City Power to take drastic measures.

“If this disruption continues, we will have no choice but to disconnect electricity to the entire area until our teams can operate safely. This will unfortunately affect innocent households — not the instigator.”

City Power previously implemented similar steps in Riverpark in Alexandra, Mayibuye and Rabie Ridge when facing resistance to operations.

The entity urges residents to reject misinformation, support authorised teams, and report any acts of intimidation.
