Local elderlies maintain a healthy lifestyle

The purpose of the program was to educate elderly people the value of maintaining their physical health and well-being by teaching them the health advantages of exercising.

The Protea South Senior Citizens Club in collaboration with the Department of Sports Arts and Culture hosted a five kilometre fun walk and aerobics health awareness programme for elderly people on April 19.

The purpose of the programme was to educate elderly people about the value of maintaining their physical health and well-being by teaching them the health advantages of exercising.

Numerous senior citizens clubs from Protea South and surrounding areas participated in the programme.

“As they age, their bodies undergo several changes that make them fragile, therefore through this programme we are showing them that a healthy lifestyle matters,” said the Chairperson of the Protea South Senior Citizens Club, Rebecca Tloubatla.

The health awareness programme included a variety of stakeholders, such as Let’s Run, Alma Clinic, and Protea South Local Clinic.

“These kinds of initiatives are important because they encourage and empower elderly people to lead healthy lives.

“Through these kinds of programmes, elderlies become aware of how to look after their health and well-being and get the chance to socialise and exchange general knowledge,” said Khumalo.

After the training session, seniors received nutritious snacks to help them boost their energy.

Speaking to Urban News, 63-year-old, Alina Masika said the fun walk and aerobics programme must be done frequently and must be carried out routinely.

“We had a really healthy session today, which has helped me maintain a decent blood pressure measurement of 124.

“On Monday, I went to the doctor for a check-up and my blood pressure measurement was 175, so I’m happy to report that my blood pressure has dropped and really I had a great time today,” said Masika.
