“This is a devastating incident, where the accused kidnapped the child, raped her which on its own is savage and thirdly murders the child. It was hard looking at him because when I did, I was overcome by emotions and a sense of anger,” Mchunu said.

He added that the accused requesting bail is ridiculous although on paper he has the right to do so.

Mthembu said, “I do not think that the suspect is remorseful at all, taking into consideration that he did not want this to be broadcasted and is telling us about himself and that he thinks that he has a chance for bail.

“This is an opportunity for the legislature and our government to come out and educate our people that if someone wants to rent out a place at your house, they need to produce some documentation,” Mthembu added.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjondwane said it is equally important for the communities to take responsibility for the people that they take in as tenants because should there be any criminal activities by the tenant, they will have to account for it.

“As the state we are going to conclude our investigation concerning the bail application the suspect wants to bring forward,” Mjondwane said.

A bail hearing will be held on November 1 after a careful investigation by the state.
