Foundation raises awareness on substance abuse

The Tranquility Rehab addictions counsellor and former drug addict, Mandla Mbatha, told the attendees how to enrol with the rehab.

The Pelican Light Foundation (PLF) recently hosted its substance abuse awareness campaign at the Diepkloof Zone 1 Library to educate residents on possible drug issues they might have.

The PLF founder, Daniel Boshomane, said they intended to win over the youth by keeping them engaged and informed about substance abuse-related topics through their initiatives.

Although the campaign targeted young people, elderly residents were also part of the day and motivated by testimonies from former drug users that the PLF helped them stop using drugs.

“I remember in 2018, I prayed to God, asking him to reveal my true purpose in life. Since then, my heart has been filled with much peace and joy because I work with families, assisting them to rebuild their lives and realise their true potential, especially those addicted to drugs.

Tranquility Rehab addictions counsellor and former drug addict, Mandla Mbatha embraced Pelican Light Foundation founder, Daniel Boshomane after his presentation.

“Young people battle with a lot. We have many graduates and young people with great potential, but some have lost their drive. The division substance abuse has caused in families is so sad,” Boshomane said.

He added that since implementing their drug awareness campaign with the South African National Council in Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, they have helped various young people in the area, including Sello Sono, who used drugs for 20 years.

“Sono managed to remove the chains of these drugs. He now has a car wash, and we even see prominent members of our society take their cars there.

“It shows us that drugs strip one of their dignity and respect because Sono is now respected by his community, and as the Pelican Light Foundation, we are proud. He was given another shot at life.”
