The impact of diabetes on hydration

Hydration is crucial for everyone, but especially for individuals with diabetes. High blood sugar levels make the kidneys work harder, leading to increased urine production and fluid loss.

This can cause dehydration, particularly during hot weather or after exercising.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration

Recognizing dehydration is vital, the signs include headaches, dry mouth, dark urine or decreased urination, dizziness, fatigue, dry skin, disorientation, sunken eyes, and leg cramps.

Preparing for summer weather

AF provides these tips to help manage diabetes during summer:

• Drink water regularly.
• Avoid sugary drinks.
• Eat hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables.
• Monitor blood sugar levels closely.
• Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
• Avoid peak sun hours (10:00 – 16:00).
• Keep medications cool.
• Exercise during cooler parts of the day.
• Act fast at the first sign of dehydration.
