City shines light on diabetes awareness

This year's theme, "Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps," highlights the importance of addressing the inequalities that exists in diabetes care and prevention.

On World Diabetes Day (November 14), the City of Johannesburg joined the global community in raising awareness about this chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” highlights the importance of addressing the inequalities that exists in diabetes care and prevention. Diabetes is a silent killer and can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.

On this important day commemorated across the world, the Office of the Speaker reminds residents of the importance of promoting early diagnosis and healthy lifestyle choices.

“It is because of this that we also call on our government and health department to prioritise access to affordable and quality healthcare for all our residents in the City of Johannesburg and beyond.

We also urge every individual to prioritise their health by making informed choices about their diet, physical activity, and regular health check-ups, especially as we head to the festive season,” said Joburg Speaker of Council, Clr Nobuhle Mthembu.

She added that this culture of leading a healthy lifestyle should also be installed in children so that it becomes a habit they can grow up with.

“Let us work together to break down the barriers and bridge the gaps in diabetes care, ensuring a healthier future for all in the world class African city.”
